Here, a simple rectangular extension was proposed, to replace a dilapidated lean-to galley kitchen and utility structure at the rear of a large three storey town house.

The new kitchen is conceived as a single simple object or volume that sits comfortably against the full height of the original house, integrated with a softer architecture connecting to the garden.

The rich colour tones and texture of cedar shingle design wrap over and define the whole volume, cladding both walls and roof. This crisp yet tactile material contrasts and compliments the existing stone of the house and adjacent brick walls, and will, in time, naturally weather to silvery grey-brown tones.

Large sliding glazed panels extend round the corner of the extension and open the building out to the garden.

This successful integration of modern and traditional architectural materials and construction, was fully fully supported by planning and Conservation officers for new construction within a Conservation Area.

The project was completed in Spring 2010.
