Part of an old Priors Court farm yard, adjacent barns were converted and extended into 2 separate dwellings some 20 years ago. The small barn at the front of the site and running along the village lane was structurally restored but retained for use as a barn, or garage for one of the new properties.

AMArchitecture was invited to prepare a proposal for the conversion of the barn to be used for ancillary guest accommodation and/or a let-able cottage.

A simple and efficient plan was designed - providing 2 double bedrooms with an ensuite at each end of the barn with a central living space;- making best use of the existing large openings and smaller windows; and retaining the materials and appearance of the original barn.

Internally, the barn was fully insulated and lined following the pitch of the roof, all to comply with current building regulations, and leaving the existing deep rafters and roof joists exposed. There is natural day lighting to all rooms, with new roof lights added discreetly on the northern north side of the roof.

Off the shelf products were used where ever possible to keep the costs down; with the french doors, glazed panels and front door joiner made to fit exactly within the existing barn openings.

All external joinery was finished in soft green to match the detailing of the main house.

We have since been invited to work on two further conversion and extension projects for the same client.
